Ingredients:

1/2 tablespoon butter
3 pounds white potatoes, peeled and cut into very thin slices
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
6 garlic cloves, finely chopped
3 cups shredded Swiss cheese
3 cups milk or 1/2 cup each milk and whipping cream

Preheat the oven to 400 F. Crease a 9 x 13 inch baking dish with the butter. In a large bowl, toss the potatoes, salt, pepper and garlic. Spread one-third of the potatoes in the bottom of the bakind dish. Top with 1 cup of the cheese, ine-third of the potatoes, 1 cup of the cheese and the remaining potatoes. Pour the milk over the potatoes, cover the dish with foil and bake for 1 hour. Remove the foil and sprinkle the remaining cheese over the potatoes. Return to the oven for an additional 20 minutes, uncovered, until the top is toasty brown. Let the potatoes cool for 15-20 minutes before cutting into squares for serving.
