Baked Brussel Sprouts

1 pound Brussel sprouts,
cut in half
1/2 white onion, chopped
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 tablespoons softened butter
1/2 cup chicken broth
1/4 pound slab bacon, (without the rind) or Pancetta, cut into 1/4-inch dice and browned (optional)
1 tablespoon butter for buttering the baking dish
Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
Butter a baking pan. In a bowl, add all the ingredients except the 1/4 cup of chicken broth. Mix well. Place in baking pan and add broth. Cover with foil and place in the oven to bake. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake for 15 minutes.
Uncover, and bake an additional 15 minutes. Remove from oven and add the butter and mix well with the content of the pan. Pour the vegetables in a serving bowl and serve.
