The Elymians, one of the first native Sicilian tribes, first founded the town of Erice with the collaboration of the Phoenicians. The Phoenicians were ultimately displaced by the Greeks. The Greeks then befell to the Romans who then capitulated to the Saracens. The Saracens finally relinquished their stronghold to the advance of the Normans... and this only takes us as far as the beginning of the 11th century!
As I travel to Erice, one question haunts me. What inspired so many peoples throughout the centuries to build their temple and their fortresses in a small Sicilian village atop the San Giuliano Mountain?
What? Were they crazy?
What were they all thinking when they decided to climb to the top of this mountain with tons of building supplies to erect a temple? For God’s sake, just look at this road!
My question was answered when I arrived. If you are looking for a place to be close to God, this is where you want to be. Look at these pictures and you will understand what I mean.
This is one of the most astonishing places I have ever seen!
